A Silent Way

I am walking down an endless hallway
from behind closed doors
I hear cellos
TV commercials
the game
and voices gripped with a hushed danger.

There is a song in my head
A Silent Way
by Miles Davis
I don’t know when it began playing
but I am in the middle of it
and it is enveloping me in its serenity
like being at the bottom of a cold, dark lake.

Cold, dark, and all alone
but for the trumpet fishes
and keyboard sharks.

A good place to think
about when it was
that something changed in me
and my own hands
became my enemies.
