Drinking Alone in Dark Bars

In the early afternoon

Two doubles and a beer

The waitress has a name

That reminds me of a singer.

I’m thinking of novels

And new beginnings.

I’m probably thinking of

The waitress

But it doesn’t hurt to try.

I’m the only one in here

And I’m out ideas for highballs

To order

Because I spend my imagination

On stories and poems

And not on my drink order

So in that

there’s a sliver of hope.

  1. So simple and honest. I always appreciate pieces like this.
